2008-07-01 Guyana go down to Scarborough in rain-marred final
TORONTO ? Guyana failed to adapt to the damp and soggy outfield, occasioned by heavy downpours at the L?Amoreaux ground here last Sunday, going down by four wickets to underdogs Scarborough Cricket Association in the final of the annual Western Union Guyana Festival 20-20 cricket competition. The game, which finally got started after 18:00 h following the sodden condition of the ground, saw Guyana being inserted in the reduced 10-over affair. The star-studded Travis Dowlin-led side never got going, reaching an inadequate 49 for nine in their allotted overs. Despite stumbling in the middle of their innings after a flying start, Scarborough reached the required target with some 13 deliveries to spare. The eventual winners were on target from the first over which saw Esaun Crandon being belted for 10 runs, including a huge six from Canadian player Zabar Choudray. However, after an opening partnership of 25 from 2.4 overs, Scarborough lost three wickets at the same score while the fifth and sixth went down at 26 and 29. Skipper Mosin Mulla and Austin Codrington however saw them safely home. The ever-reliable Lennox Cush was Guyana?s best bowler with two for three while off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine claimed two for 10. Earlier, wicketkeeper Derwin Christian top-scored with 16 off 11 balls, which included a towering six. There were two wickets each for Zaidi Hussein and Codrington for five and nine runs respectively. Guyana had earlier qualified for the final with an easy 49-run victory over the Toronto District XI the previous day while Scarborough defeated Western Canada by the Duckworth-Lewis method in the four-team tournament. Skipper Dowlin and Royston Crandon set the tone for Guyana?s 135 for six in 20 overs, adding 54 for the opening partnership in 7.2 overs before both were removed by Damodar Daesrath in the space of four balls, the former for 24 and the latter 25. Deonarine supported with 21 off 20 balls. Daesarath ended with the impressive figures of five for 14 from his four overs. Toronto District, who were led by former Guyana all-rounder Sunil Dhaniram, were restricted to 86 for eight in their 20 overs with former Guyana wicketkeeper Azib Ali Haniff scoring 19. In their opening fixture, Toronto District rushed to 36 for six off six overs when the rains came to win by the Duckwoth-Lewis method after their opponents Western Canada had reached 79 for nine in their 20 overs. Suresh Budhoo scored an undefeated 20 in a losing cause. Bowling for Toronto, Shiv Seeram took three wickets for eight runs. The eventual champions Scarborough started in a blaze of glory with an eight-wicket win over Western Canada. Set 82 for victory after Western Canada had made 81 for six in their 20 overs, Scarborough reached their target quite comfortably, losing the wickets of Vishal Arjune for 23 and Zamal Khan for 22. Idris Gangat, who was undefeated on 21 when victory was achieved, had earlier shared an opening stand of 42 in 4.4 overs with Arjune. At the presentation ceremony, which followed the final, Daesrath was named player-of-the-series while Zamal Khan received a prize for hitting the most sixes and Mulla player-of-the-final for his three brilliant catches. The festival culminated three days of activities to mark Guyana?s 42nd Independence anniversary and was organised in collaboration with Guyana Consulate and over 40 Guyanese organisations here.
