2012-10-04 Capitals win their first Challenge Division trophy

Report by Mustafa Popalzai

Capital United Cricket club were playing in their first Challenge division final in their short third year history in OVCC; on the other hand Canterbury cricket club were looking to win their 5th challenge division championship in the past 7 years. However, it was by no fluke that Capital United C.C were in the final; they were 7-3 in the regular season and undefeated 5-0 in the Super Six stages with heavy margin wins against all other top teams in the league including thrashing Defence C.C in the semis by a dominating 10 wickets.

It was looking to be an exciting and very competitive final and the game definitely did not disappoint. Capital United's skipper Khoshal Nasery won the toss and decided to field first. The opening batting pair for Canterbury C.C did not last long as Nabiullah Nawabi was perfectly using the conditions and swinging the ball both ways. Nawabi snatched the wickets of Zafar Tayyab, Akber Hussain and Asif Sheikh in his first spell. Canterbury were still in the game as their batting ace card, Zain Mahmood was dropped in the slips off the bowling of Mykell Reifer. However, Capital United did not allow Canterbury to take full advantage of their second chances that they were getting and Canterbury started to lose wickets in a hurry without adding too many runs on the board. Canterbury's Harris Chaudary (27 off 40 balls) and Mubasim Bhnounr (26 off 57 balls) helped their team post a tricky total considering the grass level and cold conditions at Rideau Hall. Canterbury C.C were all out for 126 runs and the star of the bowlers were Nabiullah Nawabi (3-42), Mykell Reifer (3-20 off his 10 overs) while Ayub Ahmadzai also impressed with figures of (2-8 off his 4.4 overs).

Capital United were now chasing 127 runs and they got off to a very good start and were cruising at one stage for 0-39. It looked like Ayub Ahmadzai and Ajmal Omar who has been in tremendous form in the playoffs would comfortably bring CUCC home. However, Canterbury had other plans; Capital United lost 3 of their top order batsmen for just seven runs and the score board read 3-46 all of the sudden. It looked like it will be another championship for Canterbury and it looked like it will be another batting collapse by Capital United C.C. The new batsmen at the crease were Mustafa Popalzai and Tariq Hakimyar and they had a mountain to climb considering the tight bowling and fielding and enormous pressure which was being placed on the batsmen at the crease. In the next five over, only 4 runs came off the bat and Mustafa Popalzai was dropped by Vikram Arora off the bowling of Asif Sheikh in the slip. However, Mustafa Popalzai choose his favorite spot over mid-wicket and struck two huge back to back sixes off the bowling off Asif Sheikh. Shortly after, the batsmen started timing the ball and were looking confident. The momentum was slowly shifting and Capital United batsmen started to feel comfortable at the wicket. Tariq Hakimyar was playing a solid supporting knock and Mustafa Popalzai continued his stroke play. Canterbury C.C never looked in the game after that and Mustafa Popalzai struck another six over mid-wicket to pass the target and win the game for Capital United. The pair of Mustafa Popalzai (46 off 70 3x6, 2x4) and Tariq Hakimyar (26 off 84 1x6) added an unbeaten 91 runs partnership to hand Capital United its first Challenge division championship in its only third year of existence in the league. They earned a much deserving trophy and the results of their top quality cricket during the season had definitely paid off now.
